People in parts of South Sudan face the highest levels of food insecurity since independence was declared a decade ago. The direct and indirect impact of COVID-19, an upsurge in sub-national violence, recurring flooding in areas still recovering from the 2019 floods, a protracted macro-economic crisis, increasing food prices and a devaluating local currency are all threatening the food security of people.

The response is implemented by 5 DRA members and 5 local partners, namely WDG, MHA, CRADA, PCO, and CEDS. The project is implemented in 5 locations across South Sudan (Pibor, Akobo, Aweil South, Tonj North and Tonj South), and focuses on:

  • Food Security and Livelihoods: the focus of this response is to provide food assistance to prevent famine and improve food consumption, dietary diversity and coping strategies for vulnerable populations in the priority locations. As such, a total of 41.370 people will be supported with food distributions (either in-kind, or through cash/vouchers). A total of 40,350 individuals from vulnerable households will receive emergency livelihood inputs (tools, seeds and fishing gear) to prevent more hunger during the next season.
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH): WASH kits (containing water purifiers, jerry cans, soaps and buckets) will be distributed to ensure access to hygiene materials. This will be complemented by hygiene promotion awareness activities in the communities. Access to safe water will be improved with the rehabilitation of 15 handpumps and 2 latrine blocks in health/nutrition facilities prior to the rainy season, benefitting a total of 7500 individuals.

The Acute Food Insecurity JR plans to reach a total of 62.670 beneficiaries with the FSL and WASH intervention across the 5 locations.
