South Sudan Acute Crisis Joint Response

Goal: Providing life-saving support to communities in South Sudan affected by the floods
Lead Organisation: Help a Child
Organisations: Africa Development Aid (ADA), Coalition for Humanity (CH), Tearfund
Duration: November 25, 2024 –
March 24, 2025
In recent months large areas of South Sudan have been affected by extreme floods, leaving people without access to basic necessities. Two national partners and one member of the Dutch Relief Alliance will provide support to the most vulnerable people affected by the recent floods in South Sudan. This response is focused on Fangak county. Because of the acute nature of this crisis and the short implementation period, the focus is on providing immediate support.

Type of response:

Heavy rains since May this year, combined with overflowing Lake Victoria have caused severe flooding in large parts of South Sudan. South Sudan is experiencing multiple crises including these unprecedented levels of floods, an influx of returnees and refugees because of the conflict in Sudan, severe food insecurity and hyperinflation. The rainy season has become increasingly severe due to climate change, stretching communities’ ability to cope with the devastation, and in some cases causing permanent displacement of communities.

The Joint Response
The Joint Response partners will carry out the following activities in response to the needs and gaps identified:

  • Shelter: Provision of Shelter/NFIs will enable construction of temporary shelter which will help reduce the current household congestion and overcrowding. Full packages of shelter/NFI supplies will be distributed. Vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant, and lactating women will receive prioritised assistance.
  • Cash assistance: Provision of cash to targeted households that have lost their food sources to flooding amid an already critical food insecurity situation will enable them to purchase food from the local markets.

The Joint Response is planning to reach 22.200 people during this response.
