The communities in Ethiopia not only face the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, but are also dealing with a devastating desert locust invasion, flooding and political unrest.

Type of response:

The response is implemented by 5 DRA members and several local counter parts, with SOS Children’s Villages the Netherlands leading the consortium. The project focuses on:

  • Food Security and Livelihoods, among which distribution of small ruminants, small grants to support the startup of local economic activities, food vouchers to bridge shortfalls,
  • Cash: multipurpose cash and vouchers
  • WASH, with the provision of soap, water filters and hygiene kits to vulnerable households, water trucking and the provision of hand washing facilities for public places like markets, schools and health centers;
  • Health including center rehabilitation, set-up of quarantine centers, establishment of a mobile rapid response team, PPE for frontline health workers, hygiene awareness and Covid-19 training.

Protection is not included as a stand-alone sector in this response, yet it is a central element of the intervention and mainstreamed throughout. The activities are designed in a way that is sensitive to age, gender and diversity. Local partners are involved in program implementation in all the sectors. Members of local government institutions and CSOs will be involved in technical capacity building trainings will undertake joint project review, exchange knowledge and skills in high quality health service provision and project management, and provide COVID-19 related MHPSS training to local government frontline health workers as part of the capacity building interventions

With the project we want to jointly reach 275.935 people.
